The Best Was to Stay Safe on Your Boat

Cruising out into the open sea can be fun, but knowing precisely what you must do to stay safe on your boat is essential. Learning how to avoid common injuries and hazards while boating is worth your while. Dangers and even fatal accidents can occur while boating in just about any body of water, regardless of size or location. Before getting out on the water, keep these safety tips in mind to help prevent an emergency.

Wear a Life Jacket

Even for those who don't plan to be in the water, it is vital to wear a life jacket, as the majority of boating deaths result from drowning. Every passenger on board, especially children, should wear a life jacket for the best protection.

Learn Survival Skills

It is helpful that everyone on board knows how to swim and that the children on board have taken swimming lessons. It is also wise to have taken a boating safety class. Understanding the basics can go a long way, and the information can even be lifesaving in an emergency.

Make Preparations with Safety Equipment

A fire extinguisher, a first-aid kit, a flashlight, and an air horn or whistle are vital for signaling on board. Bring a cell phone or marine radio (depending on where you will boat) to communicate an issue, as well.

Plan the Route

It is best to plan an itinerary before going out on the water and share it with someone staying on land. This individual should know where you are going and when to expect you back, allowing them to direct help accordingly and quickly, if needed.

Monitor the Weather

Even the smallest increase in the wind can make the waters much rougher. It can be hazardous for smaller watercraft. Remember that lightning is also a huge risk for an open boat exposed to the water. Stay on top of the forecast for any day you plan to boat. You can never be too careful if the weather is hazardous. It is better to wait to go out, or if you are already out on the water, you should have a plan to take shelter quickly if the weather suddenly takes a turn. Boating inherently has the potential for various unforeseen issues, which is why toy insurance is essential to protect your investment.

Be Smart about Alcohol

If need be, have a designated driver for the boat. Note that alcohol can easily lead to dehydration (especially in the hot sun). Be sure everyone on board drinks plenty of water and does not swim or dive while intoxicated.

Always Examine Before Jumping In

Diving off a boat has often led to an injury from an underwater obstruction below. If anyone is jumping in, first, be sure there are no obstructions in the area. It is also best to jump in feet first to avoid head and neck injuries from hidden objects.

Know the Environment

How large are the waves? What is the temperature of the water? These are just a couple of environmental knowings to be aware of that could impact survival.
