Mistakes to Avoid if you are an ATV Rider

There are plenty of mistakes to avoid if you are an ATV rider that can save you from injuries or a far worse fate. In some ways, ATVs offer more manageability for outdoor riding than a dirt bike. However, making the same mistakes that result in an injury is still manageable. It is something that anyone can prevent with the proper knowledge.

Things That Could Affect Any ATV Rider

Whether you are renting ATVs or have been into the sport for some time now and own a 4-wheeler, there are rules to follow to avoid severe mistakes and end up having to end your outings early.

Nerf Bars

Nerf bars are large helpful foot pegs. Traditional foot pegs will slip off, so people probably should not use them. Additionally, many tend to let their feet drag when riding. You will want to avoid getting your feet caught in the back tire, which would cause serious injury. Nerf bars allow the rider's feet to feel stable and help keep you in control of the ATV.

Rolling Over

ATVs are much easier to roll than most people assume. When people end up underneath a quad, it is commonly due to looping out because the rider hit the gas with minimal ATV experience. These vehicles are mighty machines. The front can spike up quickly, throw the driver onto their back, and pins them down. Also, the rider could have too much fun sliding around in the mud, and the tires will grip the ground. It will also cause the car to keep going. Another example is when riders believe they have found their bearings and aim for a steep hill, try to conquer it, then find themselves upside down, or when trying to go up the steep hill and tumble right over. You would be lucky to end up unphased in these scenarios, which is why properly knowing how to control the ATV is essential.

False Sense of Security

Be sure to be realistic about your safety when riding an ATV. Sometimes being overly confident can backfire. Keep in mind that ATVs are vehicles that can do some severe damage. It is crucial to wear proper protective equipment such as a helmet, goggles, gloves, and riding boots at a minimum. If you plan to do any tricks, add a chest protector, neck brace, knee brace, etc. ATVs are gas-powered machines without seatbelts. Toy Insurance and ATV coverage will be your saving grace when things fall apart.

Throttle Control

For those who want to go straight to "pedal to the metal" mode, remember that a quad as a mini car is not for you to release pent-up energy. This type of mentality is what causes accidents. It is common for ATVs to have a thumb throttle, and most have an automatic clutch, so that would be one less thing to worry about. The first thing you should do when starting on your ATV would be to go slow and figure out how much "thumb" to give it. Give yourself time to get comfortable with the ATV's power before fully taking off for a ride. Also, certainly know when to take your thumb off the throttle. It is never worth getting testy with it and seeing how much you can get away with.

Loading the ATV

Driving an ATV up a ramp into the back of a pick-up is unsafe. The rule of thumb is to treat the ATV like you would anything that has the potential to be dangerous. Careless behavior can be life-threatening for you and others. However, with caution and a willingness to learn, riding quads can be a hobby you enjoy for many years.
